Ask around and you will be told Masteron and Primobolan are basically the same idea: mild, dry, cosmetic, the compounds people run when they want to look hard rather than get big. That description is close enough to be useless, because it hides the two things that actually decide which one you should be running.
Start with the numbers, because the first one surprises most people.
The spec sheet

Primobolan carries the higher anabolic rating. Not by a little, by roughly forty percent. The compound with the reputation for being the gentlest thing on the shelf scores better on paper than the one people reach for to harden up.
What those ratings are actually worth
Less than the internet treats them as worth, and this matters before you make a decision on them.
Anabolic and androgenic ratings come from rodent assays developed in the 1950s, where researchers measured tissue growth in castrated rats against a testosterone baseline of 100. They are useful for ranking compounds roughly. They are not a prediction of what a given milligram will do in a training adult, and they say nothing at all about how a compound feels, what it does to your lipids, or whether it suits your goal.
The difference that actually shows up day to day
It is the ester, and it has nothing to do with either compound’s character.
Masteron propionate runs a 1 to 2 day half-life. That means every other day at minimum, and plenty of people pin it daily to keep levels flat. Over a twelve week run that is somewhere between forty and eighty injections.
Primo enanthate runs 8 to 10 days. Once or twice a week covers it. The same twelve weeks is twelve to twenty-four injections.
That gap is the single biggest practical difference between these two and almost nobody leads with it. If you have limited injection sites, scar tissue, or you simply are not going to stick to an every-other-day schedule, that decides it before any of the pharmacology does. Our notes on rotating injection sites are worth reading if frequency is the constraint.
Masteron does exist in an enanthate version with a longer ester, which removes this problem. What we stock is the propionate, so the frequency applies.
The price gap is real and it has a reason
$75 against $140. Primo is close to double, and it is not a margin decision.
Methenolone is genuinely expensive to produce compared with most anabolics. It has been that way for decades, which is why pharmaceutical Primobolan was always the costly option even when it was widely available. Drostanolone is cheaper to synthesise and that flows straight through to shelf price.
Run the cost per week at the doses on the product pages and the difference widens rather than closing, because Primo is typically run at higher milligrams. That is worth doing on paper before you commit to a twelve week plan.
So which one
They are not interchangeable and the choice comes down to what you are asking the compound to do.
| If your goal is | The sensible pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hardening and dryness in the last weeks of a cut | Masteron | Fast ester, fast visible effect, and the lower androgenic load |
| Holding lean mass in a long deficit | Primo | Higher anabolic rating, long ester, stable levels |
| A slow lean bulk with no water | Primo | Built for exactly this and it is the reason people pay for it |
| Pre-contest peaking | Masteron | Kicks in inside days rather than weeks |
| Fewest injections | Primo | Once or twice weekly against every other day |
| Lowest cost | Masteron | Roughly half the price |
They also stack together, and both product pages list the other as a stack partner. That is not a contradiction of everything above. They are doing different jobs at different speeds, and running both is a common enough approach in the last stretch of a prep.
What they share
Both are derived from DHT, which means neither converts to estrogen. No aromatisation, so no estrogenic bloat and no need for an aromatase inhibitor on their account alone. If you are running testosterone alongside, that is a separate conversation and it is covered in our Arimidex vs Aromasin comparison.
Being DHT derivatives also means they share the same downside list.
- Hair. If you are genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness, DHT derivatives are the category most likely to accelerate it. Masteron is often described as the harsher of the two here despite the lower androgenic rating.
- Lipids. Both suppress HDL. Neither is liver toxic in the way an oral is, but the cholesterol effect is real and cumulative across a cycle.
- Blood pressure. Usually modest with these two compared to wetter compounds, but it still wants checking.
- Suppression. Both suppress natural testosterone production. Neither is a standalone. Both need a recovery plan, which is what our PCT guide is for.
The one thing worth more than any comparison article is bloodwork before, during and after. Our bloodwork guide lists the panels that actually matter rather than everything a lab will sell you.
Where they stand in Canada
Both are Schedule IV controlled substances under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Neither drostanolone nor methenolone is available through a Canadian pharmacy for these purposes. There is no legitimate prescription route for physique use, and that is the honest position rather than a technicality worth arguing about.
Questions people ask
Is Primo stronger than Masteron?
On the ratings, yes, 88 against 62. In practice they do different jobs, and Masteron produces a visible change faster because of the short ester. Neither is going to add substantial size on its own.
Why is Primobolan so expensive?
Methenolone is costly to manufacture and always has been. The price is not a branding exercise, it reflects real production cost, which is also why counterfeits concentrate here.
Can you run both together?
Commonly done, and both of our product pages list the other as a stack partner. Primo for the base, Masteron added in the final weeks for the hardening effect.
Which is better for women?
Primo has the longer track record at low doses, and the product pages list 50 to 100mg weekly against 50 to 75mg for Masteron. Both are androgens and both carry virilisation risk. This is a conversation to have with a doctor rather than a forum.
Do either of them need an AI?
Not on their own account. Neither aromatises. If you are running testosterone alongside, the testosterone decides that.
Which has worse side effects?
Broadly similar, both being DHT derived. Masteron is more often blamed for hair loss and Primo for being so mild that people run it too long at too high a dose because nothing feels wrong.
The short answer
Buy Masteron Propionate at $75 if you want a fast, visible hardening effect in the last stretch of a cut and you will actually pin every other day.
Buy Primo Enanthate at $140 if you want lean tissue held or built slowly over a longer run, you would rather inject twice a week, and the extra cost is worth it to you.
If you want the background on drostanolone specifically, what is Masteron goes deeper, and the rest of the range is in injectables.
