SS-31 (also called Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a mitochondria-targeted research peptide. It’s a four amino acid chain that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane and binds cardiolipin, the phospholipid that keeps the electron transport chain assembled and running efficiently.

What the Research Covers

Most peptides act on receptors at the cell surface. SS-31 works inside the cell, at the organelle level. Research has focused on:

• Cardiolipin stabilization. Damaged cardiolipin causes electron leakage and reactive oxygen species buildup. SS-31 binds it and restores the membrane structure.
• ATP output. Studies in aged and stressed tissue models have measured improved mitochondrial respiration and energy production.
• Oxidative stress reduction. Less electron leak means fewer free radicals generated at the source rather than scavenged after the fact.
• Skeletal muscle and cardiac tissue. Clinical trials on the parent compound have looked at mitochondrial myopathy, heart failure, and age-related muscle decline.
• Renal and neurological models. Pre-clinical work has examined ischemia-reperfusion injury and neurodegenerative pathways.

Reconstitution

Mix with bacteriostatic water. Common ratios:

• 10 mg + 2 mL = 5 mg/mL. A 0.1 mL draw = 0.5 mg
• 10 mg + 5 mL = 2 mg/mL. A 0.25 mL draw = 0.5 mg

Once reconstituted, store refrigerated and use within 30 days. Keep the vial out of direct light and avoid repeated warming and cooling cycles.
